What is a Drug?...
Drugs is anything ingested or absorbed, other than food, which effects the way a person's body or mind functions.
Three Main Categories of Drugs...
1. Stimulants -
Drugs that excite or speeds up functions of the central nervous system.
**Examples of stimulants: ...**
caffeine, cocaine, ecstasy.
**Short Term Effects of Stimulants **-
Loss of appetite, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, high body temperature, sleeplessness, alertness, focus.
**Long Term Effects of Stimulants **- Insomnia, paranoia, extreme weight change, addiction.
2. Depressants ....
- Drugs that slow down functions of the central nervous system.
**Examples of depressants:...**
alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills.
**Short Term Effects of Depressants.**- Slowed pulse, low blood pressure, lack of co-ordination, confusion, dilated pupils, slurred speech, fatigue.
**Long Term Effects of Depressants.**- Insomnia, anxiety, depression, agitation, difficulty with breathing.
3. Hallucinogens ..-
Drugs that work on the brain to affect the senses, this drug will distort awareness and perception.
**Examples of hallucinogens:**
LSD, ecstasy, marijuana, salvia
**Short Term Effects of Hallucinogens ** hallucinations, intensified emotions and sensations, dry mouth, paranoia, nausea, psychosis.
**Long Term Effects of Hallucinogens.** anxiety, memory loss, weight loss, depression, flash backs.
